An index is a listing.  When you create your web space at tripod and then go to your web address, you'll see a listing of all files in your space.

Today we'll make a new file and transfer it to the web space. 

The file's name is index.html.  Notice there are no caps and it has h-t-m-l as its extension.

When someone comes to your web space they will see your index.html file---not a listing of all files in your web space.
