Introduction to Webpages

Adding pictures to web pages
You make a web page that contains
and then save the web page with the name penguins. The file you created called penguins (actually penguins.htm---Word adds the .htm for you) doesn't have the pictures in it.
If you were to e-mail the penguins.htm file to a friend, your friend would only see the words ("Penguins are the best birds on the Earth") and three empty boxes (where the pictures would go, if you had included them).
This is very different from most other computer work you do. When you use Word to do standard word processing----you might add several clipart and several pictures, but when you save your word processing file you needn't do anything special---because the clipart and pictures are all stored in the word processing document. Not so with web pages.
You may add pictures, clipart, wordart, patterned backgrounds and Word will do something quite nice for you----it will save them into a special folder. What is the name of that folder???" If your page is called penguins the folder will be called penguins_files.
When I save my file (penguins) the folder penguins_files is created. Image001.jpg is the pattern background. The other jpegs are the three pictures. The first two are cliparts I inserted. The last is a pic from a website. I went to the website, right-clicked on the picture and copied----then switched to Word, right-clicked and pasted. Then when I saved the web page, Word save the penguin pic from the Internet into the penguin_files folder for me. |
Picture Size---Don't overdo it.
Pictures are a two-edged sword as far as web pages are concerned. They make your web page much more interesting and easy to understand BUT they take a lot longer to load. When you use pictures, you must be careful not to overdo it. As a rule of thumb, don't use any picture over 50k in size.
"How do I know how big my pictures are??" When you click My Computer you're probably in the Large Icon view. You need to switch to the Details view.
Now you can see the size of the pictures I used above in the "Saving a web page file". You can see that the two pictures I used above are listed as 24K and 9K. They're just fine.
